Shomen-uchi Ikkyo with Aiki Three Principles explained by Eri Atkinson of Sutherland Dojo, 2019
# Nage Uke (Attacker)
Right Ai-hammi start Right Ai-hammi start
1 Shomen-uchi attack
2 As Uke is attacking, rise your right arm like ikkyo exercises lift.
= Arm rise from waist line to above the head with iron ring shape arm (Tetsu-no-wakka)

(^-^)v
3 The first contact point (musubi contact point) is hand blade to fore-arm.
When Uke is taller than you, maybe hand blade to tricep area of Uke's upper arm.

* Do not move off line, stay on attack line

(^-^)v

4

SOGI-DASHI

(Scrape Out)
Maintain the contact with arm, flip your hand blade (shutou) outwards
-->now your right palm is facing Uke.
The body weight shifts a little bit more to your right foot and your hip is square on to Uke, not hammi anymore.

By rotating your right hand blade outwards (flipping out),
this will allow your elbow opening (=extention) and this will be enough to break Uke's posture and to expose Uke's tricep.

* This action is not swinging your right arm to sideways to get rid of Uke's attack arm.
Just keeping your line.

(^-^)v

Uke's attack line no longer able to keep it straight as Nage's extended arm is too strong and also slight up lifting movement from Nage (Ikkyo exercises lift), the posture is broken.
Right hand blade also facing Nage (thumb is sideways)

5 Same time as right hand blade rotating outwards, rise your left hand like Ikkyo exercises lift (= Aiki lift), and the left hand blade aiming towards Uke's right tricep.

* Don't go for the Uke's elbow.

(^-^)v

6

JURYOKU-OTOSHI

(Gravity Drop)
Try not to move the left hand blade from Uke's tricep, roll the hand blade with push up motion (this movement was already created by Ikkyo lift at the beginning) and
roll downwards till all the fingers are pointing down to the mat.

This movement involes left arm elbow straightened (elbow open = extention)

(^-^)v
Attacking arm will rotate from thumb sideways to thumb down position as Nage rolls his hand blade.
It ended up to Ikkyo position.
7 After rolling left hand blade on the Uke's right arm, step in with left foot

(^-^)v
8 Set left arm extented holding Uke's arm in Ikkyo position with Uke's shoulder is pointing down to the mat.

(^-^)v
9 Lower your body focusing to put all the weigfht into the Uke's shoulder heading to the mat.
Your posture should be straight (vertically) as possible to get maximam power of gravity and extention.

(^-^)v
Uke will go directoy down to the mat with face first.

* For receiving, touch down with your left hand to brace (soften the impact) and at the same time, throw out your legs to be able to flatten your body to the mat.
Shomen-uchi Ikkyo with Aiki Three Principles explained by Eri of Sutherland Dojo, 2022

Shomen-uchi Ikkyo

Omote

Shomen-uchi Ikkyo Omote

Right Ai-hammi start

1, As soon as Uke starts to move to attack, have your right hand up (not a block, hand comes up from lower to rise)
and the moment of the contact, you flip your hand out using your thumb as axis.
-pretend your hand is a mirror and facing to your face to start with and it ended up facing to Uke.

This is not the pushing away Uke’s arm. This is the extension of your hand blade outwards.

2, your weight rasio is 70% on the front foot (right foot) and 30% to your back foot and stepping to Uke’s omote side.

3, Your left hand (elbow control arm) does not hold the elbow,
instead your left hand syutou (hand blade) goes around Uke’s upper arm/elbow area by your blade touching Uke’s arm all the time,
fingers pointing up first and goes around Uke’s arm,
then points down (extension with the ring finger and the pinky/little finger to the mat).

4, Nage’s left arm extension brings Uke’s shoulder directly down to the mat
-receiving with flat on the spot, almost face pancake.

5, pinning - position Uke’s arm more than 90 degree in the angle and use your knees to secure Uke’s body and arm.
After the photo shot, move where Uke’s finger is pointing and stretch Uke’s arm to maximam
-then you should be able to keep the pin secure with just one finger!

Shomen-uchi Ikkyo

Ura

Shomen-uchi Ikkyo Ura

Right Ai-hammi start

1, Start is the same as “Omote”.

2, Stepping to Ura side

3, It is the same movement to No3 in Omote except adding the tenkan movement when you do it.
For this to happen nicely, you have to have Uke’s arm bent so that you can rotate (like the push bike pedaling) the arm

Have to have your arm as close to as your manaka (centre) so you have 100% power (your weight) to move Uke

4, Pinning is the same as omote

Shomen-uchi Iriminage with Aiki Three Principles explained by Eri Atkinson and Paul Parrish of Sutherland Dojo, 2019
# Nage Uke (Attacker)
Right Ai-hammi start Right Ai-hammi start
1 Shomen-uchi attack
2 As Uke is attacking, rise your right arm like ikkyo exercises lift
= arm rise from waist line to above the head with iron ring shape arm (Tetsu no wakka) and
step to Uke's ura side at the same time.

Uke's attack will change its line slightly when Uke attacks with shomen (cut down from top) and Nage cut up doing ikkyo exercise (Aiki lift).
Nage's Aiki lift with all the weight focusing to Nage's outer fore-arm where the first contact point is too strong for Uke to keep his attack line straight.
Then Nage takes a step to Uke's ura side with the whole body, the contact point will slide on Uke's outer arm.

After step into Uke's ura side, make sure Uke is right in front of you
(Uke is in front of your Manaka).

(^-^)v

Nage is right behind you.
3 The right hand blade is around Uke's right innner elbow.
Left hand is holding Uke's neck with Yahazu.

* The shape of the hand on Uke's neck is called “Yahazu ”.
It's the V shape, the feather end of arrow where the bow string goes.
Make that shape by spreading the thumb from the hand and Uke's neck fits in the V shape between the thumb and pointing finger.

(^-^)v

4

JURYOKU-OTOSHI

(Gravity Drop)

Rotate your right hand blade slightly outwards (towards to Uke's hand) and at the same time, straighten the arm (open albow = extention)

(^-^)v
5 Once your right arm extention is completed, connect your arms and tanden (true centre of your body), then lower your body (No.4 and No.5 should happen pretty much at the same time).
This will allow you to put all the weight on to Uke's right arm.
Combinened No.4 and No.5 movements create the 45 digree down and out direction.

* No tenkan

(^-^)v
When Nage lowers the body with extended his arm on top of your right arm, the balance will be taken and body will tilt towards to the right foot and at the same time, led downwards by the force (gravity).
6 Once took the balance of Uke, bring Uke's head close to your right shoulder by your left hand (neck hand).

(^-^)v

7

AIKIAGE-OKOSHI

(Aikiage Raise-Up)
Do Ikkyo exersied lift (Aiki lift) with your right hand to bring Uke's head and the whole body up.

Keep your left hand on Uke’s neck and touch Nage's inner fore-arm to along Uke's spine by drop in elbow pointing to the mat.
The fore-arm is now vertical.

(^-^)v

8

NAGE

(Throw)
Basic way to finish:
After your right arm reached the high point (fully extended arm= Aiki lift is completed), turn your right hand's fingers direction pointing to the mat, at the same time, step with your right foot.
The angle of throw would be more outwards due to the step.

Advance way to finish:
The feet do not move at all and it all happens on one spot without step which is really hard to receive for Uke as the direction of throw will be vertically down to the mat.
It's named “Iriminage from Hell”or “Piledriver Iriminage”.

(^-^)v

At this stage, your body is already passed Nage's Manaka and only the head is left in front of Nage's Manaka.

It is impossible to resist Nage's down force just with the head.

Gravity will pull you down to the mat.

Shomen-uchi

Irimi Nage

Shomen-uchi Irimi Nage

Right Ai-hammi start

1, Start is the same as Shomen-uchi Ikkyo
-have the hand flipping action at the moment of contact

This is not pushing away Uke’s arm, just extending your hand blade out

2, Stepping in to Ura side
Extend your right hand where you have the contact with your Uke’s arm down
Drop your centre (if your extention down is really good, then this does not have to be much)
  Tenkan

3, Extend your right arm with your pinky and ring finger focused up to lift Uke up.
(The extension direction would be somewhere like 45 degree from your manaka
but still within your power zone-inside your shoulder)

4, To finish, your extended up right arm come straight down to the mat through the head and shoulder.
-Uke will drop to the mat on the spot on their back.

Self Defence Techniques

Self Defence Techniques

When a person grab your cloths from the front

<A>
A1, tighten your cloths (so attacker‘s hands aren’t free, locked in)
and turn either right or left whichever the connection point gets tighter.

A2, then, bow or sit down and bow, therefore the attacker will be thrown out.

<B>
B1, cross your arm on top of the attacker’s arm.

B2, Posture is slightly forward (round your back), definitely not curling backwards.

B3, Sit straight down so that the attacker can’t do anything but crushing down to the ground.

There were more techniques that you can do,
but basically secure the connection point (lock the attacker’s position in)
then use your body wight combined with gravity should work.

Always pay attention that your weight goes on to the point where extension arm is.

Gravity works the best when it is vertically down
(100% your body weight on the attacker which they can’t hold )
